Israeli far-right nationalist Interior Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir celebrated his 50th birthday over the weekend, hosting guests who enjoyed a cake adorned with a noose motif. Attendees included several senior law enforcement officials.
The cake clearly alluded to Ben-Gvir's advocacy for legislation that would impose the death penalty on Palestinians convicted of "terrorism."
At a Saturday night celebration at Villa Space in the southern Israeli moshav Emunim, Ben-Gvir’s wife, Ayala, presented him with a cake featuring a noose and the message: "Happy birthday to Minister Ben-Gvir—sometimes dreams come true."
Another large birthday cake was also present at the event, decorated with portraits of Israel, Ben-Gvir, two guns, and a golden noose.
Ben-Gvir and his party members have worn noose-shaped lapel pins for months, symbolizing their commitment to enacting this legislation. Last year, he even argued that there is "no such thing as a 'Palestinian people.'"
The proposed law has drawn widespread international condemnation. Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, New Zealand, and Australia have expressed "deep concern" over the legislation and urged Israel to abandon it. UN experts have also warned that the new rules violate international law, describing them as "essentially executions targeting Palestinians."
The guest list sparked controversy almost as much as the cake itself. High-ranking military commanders in attendance included Avshalom Peled, Jerusalem District Commander; Moshe Pinch, Judea and Samaria District Commander; and Kobi Jacoby, Director General of Prison Services. Cabinet ministers such as Defense Minister Israel Katz and Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana also attended the gathering.
