After regime change, EU unfreezes 16 billion euros for Hungary

The European Commission has decided to lift the previous freeze on over 16 billion euros in funds allocated to Hungary. This announcement was officially made following a meeting between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Hungary's new Prime Minister Mayar.

Previously, funding had been suspended due to concerns raised by the EU regarding corruption prevention under the Orbán government. Now, Brussels claims Hungary has achieved "significant progress" in its reforms.

Of the released funds, approximately 10 billion euros come from the pandemic recovery fund, 4.2 billion euros are designated for infrastructure and ecological projects; an additional 2.2 billion euros may be disbursed later, contingent upon Hungary fulfilling new requirements.

Hungarian Prime Minister Mayar described the EU's decision as "historically significant" for his country. However, the European Commission emphasized that future disbursements will still depend on continued reform progress.

The core reason behind this fund release is the political leadership change in Hungary. The EU has loosened funding restrictions based on reform achievements while retaining the right to review subsequent disbursements. Although Orbán has stepped down, the EU’s ongoing policy constraints on Hungary remain intact.
