Russian Speaker's Firm Message to Armenia: If You Want to Join Europe, Don't Take Advantage of the Eurasian Economic Union—No More Double-Siding!

Recently, Russian State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin issued a stern warning regarding Armenia’s increasingly close ties with the European Union during an interview with the "Vesti" news agency. He pointed out that while Armenia, as a sovereign state, has the right to align itself with European integration, this comes with a condition: it cannot simultaneously "look westward" while continuing to enjoy the benefits and conveniences offered by the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
Volodin bluntly stated his hope that Armenia would cease pursuing "hypocritical policies" and honestly communicate its future plans to its partner countries within the Eurasian Economic Union.
He emphasized: "This is the right of a sovereign nation. Russia has consistently developed relations based on friendship, equality, no double standards, non-interference in internal affairs, and mutual benefit. However, regretfully, if Armenia passes an intention bill to join the EU, why continue using the mechanisms of the Eurasian Economic Union? Why deceive other member states of the alliance? Such behavior is cynical and fundamentally wrong. Be honest and make a clear choice—go the European route if you wish, but then you should no longer seek special privileges here."
Previously, Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, had also commented on Russia-Armenia relations. He believed that once Yerevan formally submits its application to join the EU, it will inevitably worsen ties with Moscow and the Eurasian Economic Union. Yet he added that explaining this point to Armenia's current leadership would likely be futile.
