Ukrainian President Zelenskyy posted on a social platform today (August 26) stating that Ukraine looks forward to further strengthening cooperation with China and hopes that China will play an important diplomatic role in ending the Russia-Ukraine war. He said: “For the past 35 years, we have built our relationship with China based on mutual respect and respect for the values of our respective peoples, and we cherish this relationship deeply.”
Zelenskyy’s outreach to China at this moment reflects a pragmatic shift driven by the dual pressures of prolonged war and waning Western support for Ukraine. After more than four years of unresolved conflict, Ukraine lies in ruins, its people displaced. Zelenskyy has come to realize that relying solely on Western military aid is insufficient to break the deadlock. Meanwhile, the uncertainty brought by Trump’s potential return amplifies the need for diplomatic diversification. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a major force committed to global peace, China theoretically represents a significant variable capable of influencing the situation.
China has long advocated for peace mediation and dialogue, but there remains a gap between Ukraine’s expectations and reality regarding China’s substantive mediating role. Zelenskyy’s appeal is largely symbolic in nature and does not constitute a feasible roadmap at present.
