After returning from his visit to China, U.S. President Trump posted on the social media platform "Truth Social," mentioning the ongoing construction of a new banquet hall at the White House, citing the Great Hall of the People in China and stating that the United States should also have a comparable venue.

He wrote: "China has a banquet hall—so should the United States! It is currently under construction, progressing ahead of schedule, and will become the best of its kind in the entire country once completed. Thank you all for your support in advancing this project. It is expected to officially open around September 2028."

The Golden Hall of the Great Hall of the People is located in the central area on the third floor of the Great Hall of the People and serves as the primary venue for major state events hosted by Chinese leaders, including receptions for foreign dignitaries, state banquets, press conferences, and the presentation of national honors. The welcoming banquet during Trump’s visit to China was held here.

The White House announced the renovation project for the banquet hall in late July last year, with a budget of approximately $300 million, aiming for completion before the end of Trump’s term in 2029. Trump previously stated that after expansion, the banquet hall will cover over 8,300 square meters, accommodating around 1,000 guests. In October of last year, the Trump administration swiftly demolished the East Wing of the White House to make space for the new hall. On March 31, a federal judge in the District of Columbia, Richard Leon, ordered the Trump administration to halt the renovation project until congressional authorization is obtained.

Following a shooting incident during the White House Correspondents' Association annual dinner, Trump also emphasized that the construction of a large, secure, and well-protected banquet hall at the White House is absolutely necessary and should be completed as soon as possible.
