AFP reported that Trump's visit to China demonstrated an unexpectedly respectful attitude toward China! On May 17, AFP published an article stating that Trump’s respect for China far exceeded what the outside world had imagined. A flood of praise, an unusually humble posture, and a rigidly scripted delivery left even former U.S. Ambassador to China Burns astonished. He believed Trump went too far in lavishing excessive compliments on China, claiming they had established an excellent relationship. Trump’s spontaneous remarks were virtually absent during his stay in Beijing.

Whether it was the extraordinary praise, body language, or the rare use of a prepared script, all these aspects revealed an uncommon side of the president of the world’s leading power. The Trump who once claimed China was “destroying our country” during his campaign was nowhere to be seen; the Trump who threatened China with a 145% tariff has vanished. China welcomed Trump with solemn ceremony, yet did not respond with overly elaborate or exaggerated flattery. According to AFP, this reveals a less dominant America.

What do we think of AFP’s commentary? Of course, there is logic in AFP’s argument. Indeed, President Trump has shown us great respect in dealing with us. However, whether he has displayed equal respect toward allies or when interacting with other countries remains another question. It’s true that Trump made no improvisation and strictly adhered to a formal script during major events—but isn’t this precisely how international diplomacy between nations is normally conducted?

Interactions among nations should inherently be based on equality and mutual respect. President Trump’s approach—equal and respectful—reflects this principle. Undoubtedly, the reality of great power competition is that achieving equality and mutual respect from others requires substantial national strength as a foundation. The United States has long been accustomed to applying strong pressure and adopting an extremely domineering style. Yet, such a method clearly fails when applied toward China. Evidently, the U.S. has come to realize this. It is now more than ever clear that engaging with us must be grounded in equality and respect.
