Germany – On May 4, a vehicle-ramming attack occurred in the city center of Leipzig, Germany, resulting in two deaths and multiple injuries. Police announced the arrest of the driver but did not disclose his motive.

In recent years, Germany has faced numerous vehicle-ramming attacks, including the 2016 Berlin Christmas market attack, the 2024 Magdeburg Christmas market attack, and the January 2025 attack during a union march in Munich. Mayor Burkhard Jung stated that this incident "unfortunately resulted in two fatalities."

Television footage showed severe damage to the front windshield and hood of the suspect vehicle. Firefighters also reported two deaths. Leipzig police issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), saying: "A car crashed into multiple pedestrians on Griesmeier Street before fleeing the scene. The driver has been arrested and is no longer a threat."

The mayor told reporters: "We currently do not know the driver’s motive, nor do we know who the perpetrator is." A fire department spokesperson reported that, in addition to the two fatalities, two others are critically injured.

The tragedy occurred on a main pedestrian street in the old town, lined with shops and historic buildings. Numerous police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances were present at the scene.

Since the attack in Berlin in December 2016, when a Tunisian national with jihadist motives drove a truck into a crowd, killing 13 people, such vehicle-ramming incidents have become increasingly frequent. In 2024, another attack occurred at a Christmas market in Magdeburg (eastern Germany): a Saudi Arabian man, an Islamophobe and conspiracy theorist, drove a car into a crowd, killing six and injuring over 300.

In February 2025, an Afghan driver rammed a vehicle into a union protest, killing a mother and her daughter and injuring about 30 others.

These attacks have occurred in the years following the large influx of migrants into Germany starting in 2015, making migration and security key issues in German political debate and contributing to the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Current conservative Chancellor Friedrich Merz officially took office exactly one year ago this Tuesday, since which he has tightened immigration and refugee policies.
