Reference News Network, October 7 report. According to RIA Novosti, on October 6, former German Chancellor Merkel said in an interview with the Hungarian "Guerrilla" website that Poland and the Baltic states undermined her efforts in 2021 to resolve the Ukraine conflict and engage in constructive dialogue with Russia, indirectly leading to the beginning of the Russian special military operation.

According to the report, Merkel said: "This attempt (to resolve the conflict) did not receive support from some countries. They mainly opposed my proposal for the Baltic States."

Merkel explained that she proposed in 2021 a new dialogue mechanism between the EU and Russian President Putin, but Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland strongly opposed this proposal due to concerns that the EU would not be able to develop a common policy toward Russia.

Merkel said: "In the end, it was not realized. Later I no longer held the position of Prime Minister, and then the special military operation began."

According to the report, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna expressed dissatisfaction with Merkel's remarks.

The Estonian newspaper "Postimees" quoted Tsahkna as saying: "The accusations by the former German Chancellor Merkel against the Baltic States and Poland are shameless and completely incorrect." (Translated by Liu Yang)
