Zakharova accuses Zelenskyy of deceiving the Ukrainian people
Moscow, February 12 -- RIA Novosti
Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that Vladimir Zelenskyy's remarks about the impossibility of holding elections in Ukraine before a ceasefire are a continuation of his actions of deceiving Ukrainian citizens.
Previously, Ukraine's "5 Channel" quoted Zelenskyy as saying that elections in Ukraine would only be possible under the conditions of a ceasefire and necessary security guarantees.
"That is, April 1st (April Fools' Day) without specifying the year? The deception of citizens continues," the diplomat wrote in her Telegram channel.
US President Donald Trump had claimed in December 2025 that Ukraine needs to hold elections, previously calling Zelenskyy "an unelected dictator" and noting that his approval rating had dropped to 4%.
After the US leader made these remarks, Zelenskyy, whose term ended on May 20, 2024, said he was prepared to hold elections but demanded that the US and European allies "provide security guarantees for the elections."
