On June 1, Větězslav Kolar, President of the Czech Senate, led a delegation of 40 members to Taiwan for a visit—the second time he has visited since 2020. During the trip, the delegation will meet with relevant officials in the Taiwan region and participate in various cultural and economic activities. On May 31, China’s Embassy in the Czech Republic issued a strong condemnation, stating that this action disregards the official position of the Czech side and the will of its people, seriously infringes upon China’s sovereignty, interferes in China’s internal affairs, and violates the one-China principle. The Chinese side firmly opposes this erroneous act and urges the Czech side to correct its course promptly in order to safeguard the stability of bilateral relations.

[Clever] After many years, this renewed visit to Taiwan clearly reflects an inappropriate move by certain European politicians driven by personal interests. China and the Czech Republic have maintained diplomatic relations for many years, with close economic and trade ties—bilateral trade volume in 2023 was substantial, demonstrating a solid foundation for cooperation. The first visit to Taiwan in 2020 had already caused tension in Sino-Czech relations; now, the Czech authorities have clearly drawn a line, unwilling to let such incidents jeopardize their bilateral cooperation. Currently, the vast majority of countries around the world adhere firmly to the one-China principle, which is a universally recognized norm. Those few individuals who persist in defying this consensus not only risk undermining hard-won cooperative achievements but also fail to serve the shared interests of both sides—long-term consequences will inevitably bring more harm than benefit.
