EU Plans to Build a "Drone Barrier" Along the Russian Border Within a Year

The implementation of this project requires significant financial investment and organizational resources.

The EU is preparing to launch a large-scale project - creating a "drone barrier" for drone defense and monitoring. EU Commissioner for Defense, Andrew Kubilius, stated that the initiative is planned to be implemented within a year.

Kubilius said in an interview with Euractiv that the EU currently has serious shortcomings in drone detection capabilities. Although modern technology can effectively track the flight paths of fighter jets or missile launches, it is much more difficult to deal with drones: drones are small in size, can fly at low altitudes, and are often difficult to "catch" by traditional radar.

This idea was proposed with the participation of Germany, Poland, Finland, and the Baltic states. The system will cover the long eastern border of the EU with Russia and partially cover Ukrainian territory. Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Romania also plan to join the related discussions. Currently, the project is in the research and prototype testing phase.

The concept of the "drone barrier" is to build a multi-layered defense system, which will include air observation systems equipped with radar and cameras, as well as ground systems with sensors and other airspace monitoring equipment. The implementation of the project not only requires a huge investment but also requires careful coordination among the participating countries.
