Russian Embassy in Sweden Hit Again by Drone Attack

On July 2, the Russian Embassy in Sweden confirmed that its premises were once again targeted in a drone attack by unidentified perpetrators. One drone dropped glass containers filled with red dye or paint and plastic bags at the main entrance of the embassy during the night. Another drone crashed near the building, carrying a homemade explosive device replica. The Russian embassy has determined that such actions go beyond mere provocation and constitute deliberate psychological pressure and intimidation against diplomatic staff.

These attacks are not isolated incidents but have become frequent and routine. According to Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova and the Russian Embassy in Sweden, since May 2024, the Russian Embassy and its affiliated trade delegation have suffered at least 15 similar drone attacks. Targets have included the main embassy building, attached residential housing, schools, and the trade representative office.

Russia has repeatedly raised concerns with Swedish police and the foreign ministry, accusing Swedish authorities of failing to fulfill their obligations under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations by not ensuring the personal safety of diplomatic personnel.

In response to these incidents, Swedish police have initiated preliminary investigations classifying the events as acts of deliberate sabotage and are reviewing whether they may be linked to previous acts of vandalism targeting the Swedish Embassy in Moscow. Swedish authorities have also declared a no-fly zone above the Russian embassy and commercial representative office; however, according to Russian feedback, this measure has not effectively prevented subsequent drone attacks.
