President of the European Council: Cannot Accept U.S. Threats to Intervene in European Politics

Xinhua, Paris, December 8th - The President of the European Council, Costa, stated on the 8th that it is unacceptable for the United States to issue threats of intervention in European internal politics in its newly released National Security Strategy report.
Costa made these remarks while attending the annual conference of the Jacques Delors Institute in Paris. He said that although the United States continues to refer to Europe as an ally in the report, if they are allies, they must act accordingly. "Allies do not threaten to intervene in the internal political lives of other allies or their domestic political choices."
Costa said that the differences in worldview between Europe and the United States are growing. The United States no longer believes in multilateralism, nor does it view the "rules-based international order" as a framework to constrain itself, and even dismisses climate change as a lie.
When discussing the content of the U.S. National Security Strategy report regarding Europe and its description of the Ukraine crisis, Costa said that the new U.S. strategy emphasizes "ending confrontation" and "stability" in relations with Russia, rather than achieving a "just and lasting peace."
Costa said that Europe must "take the newly released U.S. National Security Strategy report seriously and respond and adjust accordingly." He said that the United States remains an important ally and an important economic partner, "but our Europe must achieve sovereignty and autonomy."
