Macron on Kyiv attacks: The anger of Americans should only be directed at one person - Putin

French President Macron reiterated on Thursday that "unconditional ceasefire" must be a top priority in Ukraine, and said that discussing the status of Crimea "is not appropriate at this time." Crimea is one of the core obstacles to an agreement between Kiev and Moscow.

Earlier, US President Trump claimed that Crimea had been "taken away," and Macron stated on the same day during his state visit to Madagascar, "This is describing a factual situation. Does this mean we should give Russia an exemption? No." Regarding the issue of Crimea's status, the French president added, "It is not appropriate now, and it is not for us to decide."

For the French president, "unconditional ceasefire" is "the beginning of everything." Macron said, "All other issues fall within the scope of necessary peace negotiations, which will take into account military positions, territorial issues, and security issues."

Macron said, "In Ukraine, there is only one answer being awaited: whether President Putin agrees to an unconditional ceasefire." He recalled, "The Americans proposed this suggestion," and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy accepted this principle with the support of Europeans.

Macron insisted, "Russia must now give its response. If Russia says 'I am not prepared for a ceasefire,' then it has deceived the US president and all those who have told themselves they want peace, and must take responsibility for the consequences."

Macron said, "The anger of Americans should only be directed at one person: President Putin."
