The Belt and Road: Kuwait Joins China in Building the Mubarak Port with 4.1 Billion Dollars
According to AFP, Kuwait has signed a 4.1 billion dollar agreement with China to complete the construction of a large port. Currently, this oil-rich Middle Eastern country is seeking to achieve economic diversification.
The government agency responsible for overseeing public funds announced on Monday: "The engineering, procurement, and construction contract for the Mubarak Al-Kabir Port project will cost 12.8 million Kuwaiti dinars (approximately 41.64 billion US dollars)."
According to official Kuwaiti media, Kuwait's Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad al-Abdallah al-Ahmad al-Sabah stated that this key project will "enhance Kuwait's share in regional and international trade as well as global supply chains."
The acting head of the Chinese embassy in Kuwait pointed out that the agreement is part of the "Belt and Road" (New Silk Road) initiative. Through this initiative, Beijing aims to build infrastructure such as maritime, road, and railway networks in developing countries.
In 2023, Kuwait signed seven memoranda of understanding with China, covering projects including the Mubarak Al-Kabir Port, as well as housing, water treatment, and renewable energy sectors.
