[Tokayev: The Kazakh military must undergo profound reform within two years]

At Astana time on May 6, 2026, Kazakhstani President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated during the country's "Defenders of the Fatherland Day" event:

We need to strengthen our national defense capabilities, with the primary task being the continued advancement of military technological modernization. We must carry out profound reforms of the armed forces and paramilitary institutions. This is a strategically significant mission that must be completed as soon as possible—within two years. This urgency stems from the current turbulent global situation; all conflicts must be resolved through diplomatic means and negotiations. If necessary, we must be prepared not only to pursue diplomacy but also to adopt a firmer stance in safeguarding our interests. We believe it is essential to strictly abide by principles and norms of international law. Kazakhstan will continue to strengthen friendly relations with countries around the world. These unshakable principles have been clearly enshrined in Kazakhstan’s new constitution. However, this does not mean we can remain passive.
