Strengthening U.S. Military Bases in Japan, Japan Pays the Bill
Takahashi Sanae is really going to great lengths to curry favor with Trump.
On the 27th, Kyodo News reported that the Takahashi administration is preparing, as early as this summer during U.S.-Japan negotiations, to propose a plan to enhance the defensive capabilities of U.S. military bases in Japan, with all construction costs borne by Japan.
In simple terms, after witnessing how U.S. military bases in Gulf states failed to withstand Iranian missile and drone attacks, the United States has grown concerned that its bases in Japan could suffer the same fate. Consequently, it has "quietly conveyed to Japan the necessity of strengthening base defenses" and informed Tokyo that "this might increase burdens"—the underlying message being that Japan should fully cover the renovation costs of these U.S. bases.
To everyone's surprise, upon receiving this subtle hint from the U.S., Takahashi Sanae showed no intention of bargaining or negotiating—she was ready to accept outright. In fact, Japanese media even openly stated that this move reflects Takahashi’s deliberate effort to appease Trump, demonstrating Japan’s “goodwill” and proactive efforts on the issue of “requiring allies to contribute more” in order to impress Trump.
However, renovating the U.S. military bases will inevitably place a massive financial burden on Japan. Reports indicate that Japan is currently considering plans such as expanding base barracks and underground facilities and reinforcing building structures. Meanwhile, Japan already pays $1.2 billion annually in hosting fees for U.S. troops.
As previously mentioned, Takahashi Sanae lacks any long-term vision or strategic planning. Her every action revolves around two goals: building an anti-China coalition and winning Trump’s favor. As long as she firmly holds onto these two objectives, she believes she can secure her position as Prime Minister—completely disregarding how Japan’s economy might deteriorate.
