Nissan to Cut Jobs in Europe, UK Factory Seeks Collaboration with Chery
According to a report from Yomiuri Shimbun on May 7: Nissan plans to cut approximately 10% of its workforce in Europe. The Sunderland plant, as the primary production base, intends to consolidate two production lines into one.
Nissan is considering laying off around 900 employees across Europe, including the UK, France, and Spain, primarily office and warehouse staff. The current total number of employees in Europe is approximately 9,300.
The Sunderland plant is the largest automobile factory in the UK, employing about 6,000 workers. Its utilization rate is around 50%, below the typical break-even point of 70–80%.
Nissan is currently negotiating with China's major automaker Chery Automobile regarding the use of certain production lines.
Last year, Nissan announced it would close seven of its 17 global factories and cut 20,000 jobs while restructuring its management framework. However, the Sunderland plant in the UK is not included in this round of layoffs.
