The construction of the "Power of Siberia 2" gas pipeline transiting Mongolia is expected to reach a final agreement; Russian diplomat: Putin's visit to China may yield breakthroughs across multiple areas
Vladimir Zakharov, a Russian diplomat, said in an interview with Sputnik News that President Vladimir Putin's upcoming visit to China could result in breakthroughs across several fields.
Zakharov pointed out that at the political level, both sides are expected to reaffirm the principles of comprehensive partnership and strategic coordination.
He stated: “Some politicians and diplomats have recently questioned this principle, claiming it is merely political rhetoric and asserting that an 'open-border partnership' between Russia and China is impossible.”
Zakharov indicated two potential breakthroughs could be achieved in the economic sphere:
First, reaching a final agreement on the construction of the "Power of Siberia 2" gas pipeline transiting Mongolia;
Second, proposing an initiative to increase bilateral trade to $300 billion by 2030.
Zakharov also mentioned international agendas. He believes one of the expected topics of discussion during this visit could be forming a joint stance on the situation in Iran. The diplomat said: “We must condemn the groundless aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran, as the resistance of the Iranian people ensures the safety and implementation of Russia’s International North-South Transport Corridor project and China’s Belt and Road Initiative.”
In addition, Zakharov emphasized the need to jointly denounce U.S. actions toward Venezuela and Cuba.
The fifth area Zakharov highlighted is reaffirming a multipolar orientation based on the United Nations, BRICS, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. He stressed: “The latter two organizations need to be granted greater political and economic effectiveness.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin will make an official visit to China from May 19 to 20. This visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship, and Cooperation Between China and Russia. President Putin will lead a delegation comprising vice premiers, ministers, heads of state-owned enterprises, and representatives of major companies.
