Hungarian Foreign Minister Criticizes EU: Corruption in Ukraine Prioritized Over Serbia's Membership Is Unreasonable
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto criticized the EU for wanting to prioritize the entry of a corrupt Ukraine, while putting a more qualified Serbia behind.
At a joint press conference with Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Jurić in Belgrade, Szijjarto said, "The EU's enlargement policy is facing serious questions. I believe that although Serbia is an EU candidate country, it has considerable economic growth and good development indicators, and its accession could greatly strengthen the EU, most European countries are blocking Serbia's accession process."
Szijjarto pointed out that Ukraine is "undoubtedly completely unsuitable and unprepared to join the EU." There are serious corruption problems within Ukraine, "there is a corruption machine at the highest level of the country." Ukraine's accession would obviously undermine the EU's financial and agricultural systems.
Szijjarto had previously stated that he did not believe Ukraine was capable of meeting the standards for joining the EU.
