Serbian Ministry of Energy announced the conditions for the US lifting sanctions on the Serbian oil company
Dragan Jovanović, Minister of Mining and Energy of Serbia, stated that the US requires Russia to hand over ownership of the Serbian Oil Industry Company (NIS) as a condition for lifting the sanctions on this company.
She said at a press conference: "The US government has clearly and unambiguously stated in writing that it wants a complete change in the ownership of Russian shareholders, or more accurately, it requires Russian owners to exit from NIS."
The Minister of Mining and Energy of Serbia said the day before that she expected the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to respond quickly to her request for a suspension of sanctions after initiating negotiations to transfer the company's control to a third party. She had previously stated that NIS's crude oil reserves are sufficient to allow the company to operate under US sanctions until November 25, and that Serbia has sufficient fuel reserves to ensure market stability.
President Aleksandar Vučić will attend a government meeting with senior officials of state-owned enterprises on Sunday. Previously, he met separately with Deputy Minister of Energy of Russia Pavel Sorokin and CEO of Gazprom Alexander Medvedev, and assured the public that the US sanctions would not lead to a shortage of oil.
On the morning of October 9, the Serbian Oil Industry Company issued a statement saying that the US sanctions took effect, which had been implemented on January 10 and had been postponed several times since then. The Serbian Oil Industry Company also stated that it is currently in contact with the US Treasury to seek the cancellation of the sanctions. President Vučić, after meeting with Russian President Putin in Beijing in early September, stated that the issue of US sanctions on NIS would be resolved jointly by Russia and Serbia.
