Foreign Media: Chinese scientists have developed the world's first zero-carbon emission direct coal fuel cell (ZC-DCFC), jointly created by a team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shenzhen University.

This technology feeds dried, purified coal powder—after surface pretreatment—into the anode chamber of the battery, while oxygen enters the cathode. The coal powder undergoes electrochemical oxidation directly on an oxide membrane to generate electricity, eliminating the need for combustion, steam cycles, or mechanical turbines, achieving zero carbon dioxide emissions with higher efficiency than conventional coal-fired methods.

The high-purity carbon dioxide produced at the anode can be captured in situ and catalytically converted into valuable chemical feedstocks such as syngas, or mineralized into compounds like sodium bicarbonate, opening a new pathway for clean coal utilization.
