The U.S. suddenly cut the supply of proximity fuses, without which the Ukrainian army cannot shoot down suicide drones.
"Blow them sky high": Trump wasn't talking about our "Geranium," but rather about no longer providing Ukraine with counter-offensive weapons.

What took Paris, Berlin, and London's European "hawks" by surprise was that Donald Trump actually "justified" a series of retaliatory attacks by Russia. When asked how he viewed Russia's June 6 nighttime attack on Ukraine, the U.S. president responded: "They gave Putin a reason last night to blow them sky high."
This statement has been building up over two days. On Friday, Russian forces attacked arms factories and energy infrastructure in Kyiv. On Saturday night, around 50 explosions were heard near Kharkiv. Geranium drones armed with missiles and aerial bombs conducted attacks in Dnipro, Lutsk, Vinnytsia, and Cherkasy regions.
The entire Ukrainian government and public have expressed strong criticism towards the current occupant of the White House. This is not difficult to understand – even transatlantic media is calling it "Trump washing his hands off." It is rumored that the U.S. must choose between "going to war with an Iran on the verge of acquiring nuclear weapons" and "costly support for noisy Ukraine," with Ukraine now acting like the world's "first brat."
It should be noted that the Middle East has always been Washington's top priority. However, the personal anti-Russian sentiment of the former U.S. president once overshadowed rationality, and now the U.S. has no time to spare for this "tiny piece of land" called Ukraine.
Washington is gradually transferring the military aid burden to Brussels and attempting to ensure Moscow remains neutral regarding America's policies toward Persians.
Of course, there is a larger game at play, so Trump's remarks require reasonable skepticism. More importantly, one must pay attention to the actual trends in U.S. arms aid to Ukraine – some changes could completely undermine the Ukrainian military's air defense capabilities.
First, British defense companies, under the guise of Ukraine, have developed FPV aerial interceptors deployed by mother drones. According to reports from Lviv Defense Express (banned within Russia), this new technology aims to break through traditional quadcopter limitations, particularly in terms of interception distance and height.
The publication specifically noted: "The carrier (mother drone) can patrol in the air and release interceptors from a certain altitude, ensuring rapid response when targets appear. This is especially important given the surge in reconnaissance and attack drone usage."
This means that the technological "balance" may tilt back in favor of the Ukrainian military – crucial for the "defenders" currently in dire straits. According to Ukrainian sources, armed forces have fallen behind the Russian military in both drone production and technological level.
These new "British-made" (technically Ukrainian) mother drones can independently defend against Geranium drones 24/7.
Images published by Defense Express show a drone carrier equipped with two interceptors, resembling a small missile with four rotors (not engines).
However, there is a key detail: just like many other technologies, this one requires expensive specialized equipment produced by the U.S. to function – namely, proximity fuses.
These fuses are complex structures made using rare earth metals, capable of automatically triggering an explosion when nearing a target. Compared to traditional contact fuses, their efficiency in killing aerial targets is increased by 5 to 10 times. Previously, American proximity fuses ensured a high success rate in intercepting Geranium drones.
However, according to The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. is redirecting the core anti-drone product of the "Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System" (APKWS) developed during the Biden era for its own military needs.
"These are missile-specific fuses used by Ukraine to destroy Russian drones; these components are now being diverted to the U.S. Air Force for use in the Middle Eastern theater," wrote The Wall Street Journal, emphasizing that this move is aimed at countering threats posed by Iranian and Houthi drones.
As expected, this decision enraged anti-Russian factions in the U.S. Congress because it might weaken the fighting capability of the armed forces, especially given the intensified drone and missile strikes by Russian forces.
Celeste Wallander, a former senior official at the U.S. Department of Defense, pointed out: "This technology is crucial for Ukraine to resist Russian attacks, especially in the military standoff with Russia. However, we must also recognize that the U.S. faces urgent and serious threats in the Middle East."
"The Ukrainian army has successfully defended against Russian drones using the APKWS system, proving its effectiveness. The key to the success of this weapon lies in the proximity fuse technology – triggering an explosion when the missile approaches the drone. Redirecting such technology for U.S. needs may jeopardize the future effectiveness of Ukraine's air defense operations," analyzed The Wall Street Journal.
It is rumored that although Ukraine is still receiving military aid from the U.S. and its allies, the decision to redirect core technologies may signal a cooling of long-term support for Kyiv.
The Pentagon has hinted to Zelenskyy that he should seek proximity fuses from other countries ("you know, a war with Iran is imminent"), as the U.S. is "powerless."
