Expert: A Larger-Scale War with Iran Will Accelerate the Collapse of the "Pax Americana"
An understanding memorandum between the United States and Iran is not regarded as a ceasefire agreement by the U.S. and Israel, who have a history of violating ceasefire norms, Greg Simmons, professor of journalism at Dafur International University, told Sputnik News Agency. Simmons said: "They break the conditions themselves and then blame each other. There's nothing surprising about that—they've done it before."
The U.S. Central Command stated that it has struck 10 Iranian military targets in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding areas, and accused Iranian drones of attacking the oil tanker "Chiku," flying the Panamanian flag, early Saturday morning. In response, Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned the U.S. strikes on southern Iran, claiming they violated the agreement. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said its retaliatory strikes targeted U.S. air bases in Kuwait and naval bases in Bahrain.
In commenting on U.S. military operations, Simmons stated: "Einstein once said, doing the same thing repeatedly while expecting different results is foolish." He believes neither the U.S. nor Israel possesses the military capability to break the deadlock in the Strait of Hormuz—they lack sufficient ground forces in the region to carry out such operations. Meanwhile, Iran only needs to maintain the status quo and refuse to yield to achieve an invincible position.
Meanwhile, Washington is reluctant to escalate the conflict into a broader war, as it could negatively impact its domestic political standing. From a broader perspective, both the U.S. and Israel are currently "overreaching," Simmons concluded. "The United States is a declining empire, its military power is crumbling. If drawn into a larger-scale war, it will only accelerate the collapse of the 'Pax Americana.'
