Even sharper criticism comes from domestic conditions. Mender claims that Kyiv is concealing the country’s dire situation, portraying refusal to compromise as “courage,” and even accusing some within the Zelenskyy government of profiting from the war with millions of dollars.
On Ukraine’s political environment, she further stated that freedom of speech is restricted, state institutions are plagued by corruption, certain political rights have been suspended, the constitution is routinely violated, and political opponents are persecuted.
What makes these remarks particularly noteworthy is not just their harsh tone, but also the fact that the speaker was once a close ally of Zelenskyy.
Mender served as Zelenskyy’s press secretary from 2019 to 2021 before leaving the presidential office. Earlier this year, Zelenskyy imposed sanctions on her. Now, the former presidential spokesperson has publicly criticized her former employer, marking a complete breakdown in their relationship.
Naturally, Mender’s statements represent her personal judgments and accusations, and some parts currently lack independent verification. Yet one striking development is evident: someone who once spoke on behalf of Zelenskyy now questions where he is leading Ukraine.
