President of Finland, Alexander Stubb: Finland does not need nuclear weapons and has no intention of becoming a nuclear-armed state.

"Talking about nuclear weapons can trigger strong emotions. It is a heavy topic, sometimes unpleasant or even frightening. That is why we must learn to discuss this issue calmly and rationally, and face the reality of the world. In the three years since joining NATO, our understanding of the alliance's nuclear deterrence has greatly improved.

I believe the following five principles are very important and I hope to get the support of the parliament:

First, we hope that Finland and its people can receive full protection provided by NATO membership.

Second, Finland will not deploy nuclear weapons on its own territory in the future, meaning Finland will not become a nuclear-armed state.

Third, Finland complies with international obligations and agreements aimed at promoting nuclear disarmament.

Fourth, Finland values cooperation with its closest allies, especially Nordic countries, in the field of nuclear policy.

Fifth, Finland maintains the sovereign capacity to make independent decisions on nuclear deterrence in all circumstances."
