Media: Finland urges all parties not to equate security guarantees for Ukraine with NATO Article 5
According to a report by Politico, citing internal U.S. State Department communications, Finland does not agree with U.S. officials using the phrase "similar to NATO Article 5" to describe security guarantees for Ukraine.
The report said that this issue was discussed during a meeting between Finnish Foreign Minister Tuomisto and U.S. legislators in January this year.
The report cited the content of the U.S. State Department's communication, which stated: "Tuomisto warned against proposing any 'similar to Article 5' security guarantees for post-war Ukraine. She pointed out that this could lead to confusion between the collective defense commitments stipulated by NATO Article 5 and bilateral security obligations towards Ukraine."
NATO Article 5 states that if an alliance member is attacked, other members will collectively defend it.
