Export artery paralyzed! Odessa port blockaded, Ukraine loses $70 million daily
Since Russian forces launched continuous attacks on the major port area of Odessa starting July 22, ships have ceased entering the local ports. In just the first two weeks of July, Russia carried out 23 strikes targeting port infrastructure and attacked 17 civilian vessels. Following these incidents, major insurance companies suspended underwriting war risk policies.
The large port area in Odessa handles about two-thirds of Ukraine's export cargo. In June alone, goods exported daily through these ports were valued at approximately $70 million.
It will be difficult to find alternative transportation routes in the short term: the port's monthly cargo throughput capacity reaches up to 7.4 million tons, while all alternative channels—including Danube River shipping, railways, and highways—combined can only handle around 3 million tons.
