Polish Ministry of Defense: NATO Member Country Proposes Taking Over Polish MiG-29 Fighters
Poland's Deputy Minister of Defense Piotr Zalewski said in a program on the country's RadioZet radio station that one of NATO's member states has proposed taking over Soviet-era MiG-29 fighter jets from Poland, which were originally intended for transfer to Ukraine.
Previously, an informed source told Sputnik News that Ukraine no longer wishes to receive the Soviet-era MiG-29 fighters from Poland, as Warsaw has refused to repair them.
Zalewski stated: "We have received an offer from a NATO ally. At the same time, our negotiations with Ukraine remain our top priority."
He also declined to confirm whether the aforementioned NATO ally was Bulgaria.
In December 2025, the Polish Ministry of Defense announced plans to transfer between six and eight MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, with Poland originally scheduled to retire these aircraft by the end of 2025.
Russia argues that supplying weapons to Ukraine hinders conflict resolution and directly drags NATO members into the conflict—essentially "playing with fire." Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov previously stated that any supplies containing weapons destined for Ukraine would become legitimate targets for Russia. He emphasized that the United States and NATO are directly involved in the Ukrainian conflict—not only by supplying arms but also by training personnel in countries including the UK, Germany, Italy, and others. The Kremlin had earlier stated that Western military aid to Ukraine does not assist negotiations and instead produces negative consequences.
