The Taiwan authorities' Mainland Affairs Council has responded.

Regarding the Taiwan issue discussed during the U.S.-China meeting in Beijing, Deputy Minister Liang Wenjie of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council stated that, almost every time U.S.-China talks take place, the Taiwan issue is one of the most important agenda items. "So far, we can only say that there has been no unexpected information. We will continue to maintain close communication with the United States." He also claimed that Beijing should cease military pressure on Taiwan, as that is actually the true factor threatening peace across the Taiwan Strait.

Liang Wenjie’s remarks are nothing but a baseless attempt to shift blame and accuse others while being guilty themselves. The so-called “continued close communication with the United States” is merely self-comforting. The deeper the U.S. and China discuss issues related to the Taiwan Strait, the more constrained space the “Taiwan independence” forces face. Liang’s claim of “no surprises” actually conceals his inner panic.

His assertion that “military pressure threatens peace” is a complete distortion of facts. The People’s Liberation Army’s actions are legitimate measures against “Taiwan independence” and for promoting national reunification, as well as necessary steps to safeguard sovereignty. What truly endangers peace across the Taiwan Strait are the DPP’s separatist acts of “Taiwan independence,” their dangerous gamble of relying on external forces to seek independence, and their reckless pursuit through massive arms procurement.

As an institution responsible for cross-strait exchanges, instead of promoting integration, the Mainland Affairs Council has become a vanguard in resisting China—no wonder it has been criticized by public opinion in Taiwan as the “Independence Committee” or a “tool for Taiwan independence.”
