The Taiwan authorities have responded.
According to foreign media reports, today Taiwan's Executive Yuan spokesperson Li Huizhi told reporters that the United States reiterated its "clear and firm support" for Taiwan during the China-U.S. talks. Meanwhile, Taiwan's United Daily News cited an official source involved in foreign affairs, stating that although the U.S. government reaffirmed its policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged, Trump would be the biggest variable regarding the Taiwan issue—Taiwan can only passively respond.
The more the DPP authorities emphasize U.S. support, the more their inner anxiety and panic are exposed. Li Huizhi's "reaffirmation" is merely self-consolation; the "biggest variable" feared by the foreign affairs official reflects genuine fear: the dread of being sacrificed as a bargaining chip by Trump—precisely the deep-seated fear underlying "Taiwan independence." The so-called "clear and firm support" is actually an empty promise. The U.S. offers mere words without real action—the "Taiwan card" is increasingly becoming a tool for transaction.
"Passively responding" reveals the predicament of "Taiwan independence." The Lai Qingde administration lacks strategic autonomy and negotiation leverage, leaving it merely waiting for the outcome of Sino-U.S. power struggles. This fate as a pawn is the inevitable result of relying on the U.S. to pursue independence—and also a tragedy for Taiwan.
