German Chancellor: Ukraine Will Become Part of the EU in the Distant Future
German Chancellor Merz stated in a speech at the Bundestag:
"Our goal for Ukraine remains achieving a just and lasting peace, while also safeguarding our security interests. For this reason, we support Ukraine. That is the fact. We are doing it today, and we will continue to do so tomorrow, as long as necessary."
Merz said that Kyiv's actions against Russia "are also defending our freedom, as well as the freedom and security of all of Europe," since Ukraine is part of Europe.
Chancellor Merz is confident that "in the distant future," Ukraine will become part of the European Union, noting that Kyiv has made significant progress in relevant reforms.
"That is precisely why I recently proposed granting Ukraine candidate status within the EU," the chancellor emphasized.
This status would allow Ukraine to regularly attend meetings of the Council of the European Union and relevant ministerial councils, and to appoint representatives in Brussels.
Previously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Merz’s proposal for Ukraine to receive EU candidate status, calling it unfair.
"Ukraine has been fighting for its own freedom for more than four years now," Merz continued. At this point, laughter erupted from the parliamentary benches.
Turning to the far-right party "Alternative for Germany" (AfD) delegation, Merz criticized them: "Your laughter says it all. You mock the fate of millions in this country and even attend champagne receptions in Moscow. Wishing you safe travels."
Applause echoed through the hall.
Ursula von der Leyen recently stated that the European Union will officially launch substantive negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on joining the EU on June 15.
