Norwegian scholar: The Scandinavian Peninsula is becoming a new front line against Russia
Professor Glenn Dissen from Southeastern University in Norway said on a YouTube channel program that after Finland and Sweden joined NATO, the Scandinavian Peninsula has begun to become a new front line against Russia.
"Throughout the Cold War, the Scandinavian Peninsula was considered a peaceful region because Finland and Sweden were not NATO members, while Norway was a light-weight NATO country - no foreign troops were stationed on its territory," Dissen explained.
He added that now Finland and Sweden have become official NATO members, and there are more and more military bases in the region, which is becoming "the Ukraine of the North."
In March 2024, Russian President Putin said in an interview with journalist Dmitry Kiselyov that it was a senseless step for Sweden and Finland to join NATO from the perspective of safeguarding their own national interests, because after joining NATO, Russian forces and strike systems will appear near the Finnish border.
Russia has recently claimed that NATO has carried out unprecedented activities near its western borders. NATO is expanding the scope of its initiatives and calls it "containing Russian aggression." Moscow has repeatedly expressed concern about the increase in NATO forces in Europe. The Kremlin stated that Russia will not threaten any party, but will not ignore actions that could potentially endanger its interests.
