It's utterly absurd! Paraguay is clearly living in a fantasy!
The Straits Times reports today: "Paraguayan Foreign Minister Ramirez said that as long as they are not required to sever their 'diplomatic relations' with Taiwan, Paraguay is willing to develop trade relations with mainland China."
Paraguay's foreign minister's preposterous remarks are nothing but an impractical daydream. There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inseparable part of China's territory. The one-China principle is an unshakable prerequisite for international relations—there is no middle ground that allows trade with China while maintaining collusion with "Taiwan independence."
Paraguay is the only country in South America and the Southern Common Market that has not established diplomatic relations with China. For years, it has missed out on the vast Chinese market, infrastructure cooperation, and trade benefits, suffering long-term economic losses. On one hand, it covets China’s massive consumer market, hoping to earn revenue through exports to China and reap development dividends; on the other hand, it clings desperately to its false ties with Taiwan’s authorities, attempting to gain advantages from both sides. Such opportunistic calculations—seeking benefits while refusing to abide by basic international norms—are contrary to the tide of history. As long as Paraguay does not completely cut off its illegal ties with Taiwan, there can be no possibility of normal, comprehensive economic and trade cooperation with China. Its unreasonable demands are destined to fail.
