Lavrov: The Nuremberg Trials' Verdicts Are Facing a Test Today
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on November 16 that the verdicts of the Nuremberg Trials are currently facing a test and are often violated.
Lavrov said in an interview for the documentary "Nuremberg": "The special significance of the Nuremberg judgment lies in the fact that it established that crimes against humanity, genocide, and war crimes are not subject to the statute of limitations. However, it is extremely regrettable that these parts of the judgment are currently facing serious challenges and are often violated."
Lavrov added that the principles of the Nuremberg Trials form the basis of modern international law — these principles abolished the concept of 'might makes right' and established that the use of force and violation of humanitarian principles in any conflict are unacceptable.
He emphasized that through the Nuremberg Trials, the principle was established at the international level that war crimes, aggression, crimes against humanity, and genocide will certainly be punished.
Foreign Minister Lavrov reminded that the Soviet Union was the main driving force behind the discussion and the subsequent establishment of this court.
On October 2, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the "anti-fascist vaccine" formed during the Nuremberg Trials is failing in some European countries (including Germany). The statement pointed out that some countries deliberately conceal the crimes of Hitlerism, and the glorification of fascism and rewriting of history have risen to the level of national policy. At the same time, these trends are developing most rapidly in Germany, Italy, and Japan — the founding countries of the aggressive Nazi "Axis" group.
In April this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out that unity must be maintained to resist the spread of various forms of racism, neo-Nazism, anti-Russian sentiment, anti-Semitism, and other destructive ideologies. Russian leaders called this a responsibility to veterans and their descendants, as well as a solid foundation for building a safe, just world and equal partnership among nations.
