Kazakhstan Joins the Abraham Accords
U.S. President's Special Envoy Witkoff (Steve Witkoff) said that a new country will join the Abraham Accords, and this country is Kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan is expected to announce its accession to the Abraham Accords on Thursday evening, becoming the latest country to join the agreement. The agreement aims to normalize relations between Israel and Muslim countries.
According to AFP, U.S. President Trump's special envoy Witkoff said at the Americas Business Forum in Miami: "I will fly back to Washington on the 6th, because another country will be announced to join the Abraham Accords (Abraham) tonight."
When asked which country it was, Witkoff told Fox News Channel host Bret Baier: "I'm not sure if it has been publicly announced yet." However, Kazakhstan has confirmed the above information.
In fact, Kazakhstan has already established comprehensive diplomatic and economic relations with Israel, and now announcing its accession to the Abraham Accords is largely symbolic.
President Tokayev of Kazakhstan is expected to meet with U.S. President Trump and leaders of four other Central Asian countries at the White House on Thursday.
The United States has been committed to getting Central Asian countries to join the Abraham Accords, aiming to expand its influence in the region. For a long time, the Central Asian region has been dominated by Russia and is increasingly being lured by China.
During Trump's first term as president, the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco normalized relations with Israel according to the Abraham Accords in 2020.
Saudi Arabia had also negotiated with the U.S. for normalization of relations with Israel, but Saudi Arabia suspended the related negotiations after the Gaza war broke out in October 2023.
The Abraham Accords were a joint statement issued by Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States on August 13, 2020. Subsequently, agreements between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (Israel-UAE Peace Agreement), Bahrain (Bahrain-Israel Peace Agreement), Sudan (Israel-Sudan Peace Agreement), and Morocco (Israel-Morocco Peace Agreement) were also considered part of the Abraham Accords.
