Putin revealed that Russia is involved in the construction of four nuclear power units in China, and four operating nuclear power plants in China are using Russian technology.

Reported by TASS on June 6.

Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a speech at the plenary session of the 29th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

President Vladimir Putin stated that four nuclear units in China have been built with Russia's participation, and another four are currently under construction.

"When it comes to energy, I start with nuclear power. We are building nuclear power plants in China... Four units are already operational, using our design, and another four units are being constructed together with China," Putin said.

The four nuclear units currently under construction in China, which Putin referred to—Units 7 and 8 of Jiangsu Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant and Units 3 and 4 of Liaoning Xudabao Nuclear Power Plant—are landmark nuclear energy projects symbolizing the comprehensive strategic cooperation between China and Russia in the new era. The groundbreaking ceremony was jointly witnessed by the leaders of both countries on May 19, 2021.

All units fully adopt Russia’s advanced VVER-1200 third-generation pressurized water reactor technology, with each unit having a capacity of approximately 1.274 million kilowatts and a designed lifespan of 60 years—representing key engineering projects showcasing mature and advanced Russian nuclear technology in China.

Russia is responsible for the overall design of the nuclear island, supply of core main equipment such as reactor pressure vessels and steam generators, and nuclear fuel supply; while China oversees the overall plant design, conventional island construction, civil works, on-site installation and commissioning, and supporting facilities construction.
