Israel detains UN deputy secretary-general—yet another "misunderstanding"?

Israel has shown no respect for the United Nations whatsoever.

According to Israel's Yedioth Ahronoth, on the 12th, UN Deputy Secretary-General Gille Mischon was detained by Israel's National Security Agency (Shin Bet) at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv for approximately 45 minutes. The reason: Mischon had visited Gaza last year, which led to his detention and questioning by Shin Bet.

Currently, the Israeli Foreign Ministry has offered an explanation, claiming this was a “mistake” and that Israel “mistook the person.”

Frankly speaking, Israel’s response is utterly ridiculous: among all the countries in the world, why does Israel keep having “misunderstandings” every few days?

Last year, a delegation of over 20 foreign diplomats traveling to the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank was met with gunfire warnings from Israeli forces en route. Subsequently, Israel’s military offered a similarly familiar excuse: soldiers “didn’t know they were diplomats,” and even blamed the delegation for “deviating from their route”—such an absurd claim drew direct criticism from the United Nations itself.

From firing upon diplomatic delegations to detaining a UN deputy secretary-general, Israel repeatedly resorts to feeble excuses like “misunderstanding,” “regret,” and “unawareness” when responding to international scrutiny. This is not merely a superficial dismissal of individual incidents—it is a blatant disregard for international law and the authority of the United Nations. Indeed, one might say that today’s Israel is even more arrogant than the United States.
