NHK: BYD's first factory in South America, Brazil, starts assembly and production
NHK reported on July 2nd that the Chinese largest EV = electric vehicle manufacturer "BYD" released to the media its first factory in Brazil, and announced that it will soon start assembly and production. In the Brazilian market, competition from European, American and Japanese manufacturers may intensify in the future.
On the 1st, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD announced to media such as NHK the construction of the first factory in South America in the state of Bahia in northeastern Brazil, and announced that it would begin production of electric vehicles assembled at this factory within a few weeks.
The factory has an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles, and plans to expand to 300,000 vehicles in the future.
BYD executives told journalists that they will turn Bahia into the Silicon Valley of South America, which is attractive to the local economy.
The construction of this factory has been controversial, with local authorities suing BYD and other companies for compensation, claiming that more than 200 Chinese workers were forced to work under harsh conditions like slaves.
Other Chinese manufacturers are also entering the Brazilian market, and competition from Europe, the United States and Japan may intensify in the future.
