According to the South China Morning Post, BYD has received its sixth cargo ship "Changsha" on June 24. The ship can transport 9,200 vehicles and is currently the largest in its fleet.

Three days earlier, the company also received another cargo ship with the same capacity, "Xi'an". BYD said that the "Xi'an" will be put into immediate use and has already departed from Taicang, Jiangsu Province in eastern China on June 24, heading to European countries such as Italy, the UK, Spain, and Belgium.
So far, the total capacity of the six Ro-Ro ships under BYD has reached 45,600 vehicles. Additionally, two more Ro-Ro ships, which are expected to be delivered in the coming months, have a combined capacity of 16,200 vehicles. This means that BYD will increase its shipping capacity to over 60,000 vehicles this year.
Chen Jinzhu, CEO of Shanghai Bright Auto Service Co., Ltd., a consulting company, said, "These cargo ships reflect BYD's determination to achieve higher sales outside the Chinese market, as overseas markets can bring higher profit margins. Owning and operating car cargo ships can also enable BYD to accelerate exports and save on shipping costs."
According to statistics, BYD exported a total of 374,200 vehicles from January to May this year, an increase of 112% compared to the same period last year, accounting for 21.5% of its total deliveries. Compared to the 10% share in the same period of 2024, BYD's export speed has been rapidly increasing over the past year.
Notably, despite the high taxes that pure electric vehicles from China face when exporting to Europe, BYD needs to pay a 27% tariff, but the price of its Dolphin Surf (Dolphin) in Europe is still only 22,990 euros, much lower than most pure electric vehicles in the European market.
In April this year, BYD's pure electric vehicle sales in Europe exceeded Tesla for the first time. According to the latest data released by market research company Dataforce, BYD's sales in Europe reached 13,000 units in May, and the overall sales of Chinese car brands in Europe increased by 85%, exceeding 60,000 units.
Similar to BYD, Chinese brands such as SAIC and Chery, which are known for exports, have already started or are accelerating the construction of their own cargo fleets.
