Korean Media: China Is Rapidly Catching Up with South Korea in the LNG Carrier Market!
On July 28, Korean media outlet Herald Economic published an article stating that China is rapidly catching up with South Korea in the field of LNG carriers.
China is expanding its production capacity in high-value-added shipbuilding by delivering two ultra-large LNG carriers built using indigenous technology to clients.
Recently, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, delivered two 174,000-cubic-meter LNG carriers to its client.
These vessels are 299 meters long, with a deck area equivalent to three standard football fields, capable of carrying 174,000 cubic meters of LNG.
China's share in the global LNG carrier market has now exceeded 30%. Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding currently holds approximately 60 LNG carrier orders, ranking first worldwide in total transport capacity, with order backlogs extending through 2031.
China is accelerating research and development on next-generation ultra-large LNG carriers. It is reported that Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding recently commenced construction of a 271,000-cubic-meter "QC-Max" type LNG carrier—the largest LNG carrier ever built, hailed as the world’s biggest.
Experts note that although South Korea has long led in the LNG carrier sector, China is quickly closing the gap by enhancing its competitiveness. Large, high-capacity LNG carriers will strengthen China’s position in the global LNG market and support the development of marine energy.
