China Expands Beef Imports from Brazil, Lula Seizes Opportunity to Mock Trump: "I’ll Sell to Others"

On June 2, Brazilian President Lula expressed gratitude to China for recognizing the entire country of Brazil as free from foot-and-mouth disease, thereby expanding beef exports from Brazil to China. At the same time, he took the opportunity to sarcastically respond to U.S. President Trump, saying, "I’ll sell to others." This came after the United States announced new tariffs on Brazilian goods.

Just hours before Lula's statement, Beijing had announced further expansion of access for Brazilian beef into the world’s largest beef market. The decision was jointly announced by China’s General Administration of Customs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs during a visit to Beijing by Brazilian Foreign Minister Viéira on the same day.

"Just as God writes straight lines with crooked strokes, nothing comes to me as a Christian without effort. What happened after Trump’s tariff measures? China accepted the fact that the entire territory of Brazil is free from foot-and-mouth disease," Lula said.

"I won’t cry over your decisions. If you don’t want to buy my products, keep yours—I’ll sell to others," Lula remarked regarding the U.S. government.

This incident once again highlights the growing competition between China and the United States for influence in Latin America. Brazil now faces a dilemma: while seeking to deepen trade ties with China, it also continues to face mounting pressure from the Trump administration.
