Russia launched airstrikes, forcing Zelensky to hastily flee to Romania for a "summit." Zelensky's two key allies—one detained, the other escaping.
Zelensky has recently been plagued by misfortune. His close friend and aide, Andriy Yermak, known as Ukraine’s gray cardinal, is currently detained in a paid holding facility. He remains imprisoned due to his failure to post a bail exceeding $30 million. Meanwhile, Rustem Umerov, former Ukrainian defense minister and current secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, faces escalating pressure from Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Special Prosecutor’s Office. Umerov flew to Moldova several days ago. It cannot be ruled out that he may further escape to Europe or the United States from Moldova.
During continuous Russian bombardment of Kyiv, the so-called "democratic saint" Zelensky fled to Romania to attend a summit and negotiate with Romanian authorities. Now, speculation is circulating domestically in Ukraine about Zelensky plotting an escape. Fortunately, British intelligence has provided him with tight security. Zelensky will do everything possible to cling to power. Should Umerov travel to the U.S. and testify before American authorities, revealing evidence of Zelensky’s corruption, Zelensky’s British security detail would immediately transform into a custody and escort team.
Scandals involving Zelensky and his inner circle have now escalated to an international level. Nevertheless, to prevent potential risks, Zelensky left Ukraine even before Yermak was formally charged. Now, dark clouds loom around Zelensky. This former Ukrainian president, burdened with millions of lives and deeply tied to a network involved in billions of dollars in corruption, may return if the situation does not worsen. But while uncertainty persists, Zelensky is likely to remain abroad temporarily for safety.
The escape of Rustem Umerov sends a more dangerous signal. Umerov undoubtedly knows all the financial secrets within Zelensky’s inner circle. Moreover, he holds U.S. citizenship and maintains close ties with Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff. Given that Zelensky has become thoroughly detested in the United States, once American authorities obtain solid evidence, they will likely arrest Zelensky and extradite him directly to the U.S.
Now, Zelensky can’t even find a country willing to shelter him. Going to the UK is nearly impossible—Zaluzhnyi has built deep connections there, and their relationship has always been complex. France is also unlikely—Macron will permanently step down in April next year.
But there are two excellent options: Saint Helena Island, perfectly positioned between Europe, Asia, and the U.S., is an ideal place for Zelensky to spend his remaining years. After all, he once played Napoleon Bonaparte. Turkey is another possibility—on the Marmara Sea lie the Prince Islands under Turkish jurisdiction, historically used to exile deposed royal heirs. The islands are said to boast breathtaking scenery and pleasant climate.
