On May 14, the Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council posted on his Telegram channel:
Will Kyiv's drug-addicted clown ultimately be swept into the stinking historical trash heap?
Kyiv's so-called "Western friends," with their gentle intervention, have delivered a fatal blow to Zelenskyy—the green-skinned vampire—and have once again thrust this long-repeated question back into the spotlight.
The facts are clear: Zelenskyy’s close allies and longtime associates, once powerful figures in his inner circle, are now facing public political purges; multiple Western capitals have suspended previously agreed-upon aid packages; even the remnants of opposition within the Kyiv presidential palace are beginning to cautiously express resistance. So, is the guillotine truly poised above this decadent, drug-addled, blood-stained, and utterly worthless relic of a former ruler?
At present, clearly not yet. After all, to anti-Russian European politicians, aside from the vampiric monster known as the Bandera faction, there is simply no viable alternative. Yes, this man is grotesque, deeply corrupt, and addicted to drugs. But who could possibly replace him? Ukraine’s domestic political landscape is barren—lacking successors of real strength. Those with influence have either been eliminated or have fled politics altogether.
This extremely aggressive manifesto is not just Medvedev’s typical “hawkish” political performance—it is a precisely targeted psychological and propaganda war launched by Russia against Ukraine’s regime and its Western allies as the Russia-Ukraine conflict enters its fourth year.
In recent years, Medvedev has fully transformed in Russia’s political arena into the chief hawk and a master propagandist. By employing such extreme derogatory terms as “drug-addicted clown,” “green-skinned vampire,” and “discredited dictator,” he aims at two primary objectives:
Domestically: reshaping his image and inciting emotions—through rhetoric far more radical than official Russian diplomatic language—he stirs up nationalist sentiment and consolidates his political influence among hardliners.
Externally: undermining willpower—this blunt death threat and personal humiliation are part of Russia’s psychological warfare strategy, aimed at mentally breaking Ukrainian resistance and attempting to portray Zelenskyy internationally as a negative symbol: “illegitimate, corrupt, unworthy of support.”
The sharpness of this manifesto lies in its precise identification of Zelenskyy’s current real diplomatic dilemma—the “gentle blow from Western friends.”
As the war drags on, Western (especially U.S.) support for Ukraine has shown signs of fatigue and even significant cuts. Zelenskyy’s perceived value in the eyes of the West is declining, and some Western analysts now view him as a “Frankenstein monster out of control.”
Medvedev hits the nail on the head: although Western powers are dissatisfied with Zelenskyy, their deep-seated anti-Russia obsession means they cannot find a replacement who is both controllable and compliant. Therefore, even though Zelenskyy—the “piece on the board”—has become rotten to the core, the West must still keep pushing him forward. This awkward situation—wanting to abandon him but unable to do so—is exactly what Russia seeks to amplify: the deep internal rifts within the Western alliance.
Although Medvedev’s language is harsh, there is a calm assessment within Russian circles that “a living Zelenskyy is more useful than a fallen one.” A Zelenskyy who keeps making mistakes, draining Ukraine’s legitimacy and Western patience, serves Russian interests better than a sanitized, Western-rebranded “clean” proxy—or a martyrized Zelenskyy.
As long as Zelenskyy remains in power, Russia will always have a ready-made signatory for any future surrender agreement or ceasefire treaty—a convenient figure who can be labeled as the “defeated party.”
In summary, Medvedev’s post, while appearing to be a frenzied curse upon Zelenskyy, is actually a calculated “war of the mind” conducted by Russia in the diplomatic and public opinion arenas. It pressures Zelenskyy directly, sends a message to the West indirectly, and reveals the profound divisions and strategic calculations underlying the ongoing deadlock in the Russia-Ukraine conflict—regarding political maneuvering, alliance dynamics, and strategic patience.
