China faces another move by the United States, with Alibaba, Baidu, and BYD added to a blacklist.
The U.S. also urged NATO allies to abandon Huawei.
Reported by Bloomberg on June 8 (local time).
The U.S. Department of Defense has included Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, search engine Baidu, and BYD in its "Chinese Military Companies" list, citing their collaboration with the People's Liberation Army (PLA).
Additionally, another Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer—NIO—has also been added to the list.
According to reports, approximately 15 companies were included in this list this year.
The U.S. Department of Defense began issuing the "Chinese Military Companies" list in 2021, and it currently includes more than 100 Chinese firms.
Inclusion on this list does not immediately trigger sanctions, but companies on the list are prohibited from serving as contractors for the U.S. Department of Defense.
Furthermore, this may signal to investors that these enterprises could soon face trade or other restrictions.
Meanwhile, the U.S. is urging NATO allies to stop using Huawei.
Joshua Yang, Coordinator for China Affairs at the U.S. State Department, recommended removing the company’s equipment and replacing it with products from alternative suppliers.
The Trump administration has called on NATO allies to allocate part of their defense spending toward replacing telecommunications networks and critical infrastructure equipment made by Chinese firm Huawei.
Bloomberg notes that Washington has long viewed Huawei and other Chinese manufacturers as national security threats and has already excluded such equipment from U.S. networks.
Now, the Trump administration is pushing its allies to take similar actions.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Yang’s remarks were particularly directed at Germany, which, along with Spain, opposed the European Commission’s initiative to ban Chinese telecom equipment suppliers at the EU level.
