Chinese Prisoner's "Privileges" Controversy Spreads: 14 Staff Members in Bangkok Detention Center Suspended

The Thai Department of Corrections confirmed that during a recent surprise inspection at the Bangkok Remand Prison, a Chinese national prisoner was found to have long enjoyed various privileges within the prison. The prisoner's cell contained a large number of prohibited electrical appliances such as microwave ovens, refrigerators, and air conditioners, and there were even allegations that he had engaged in sexual activities with women brought into the prison. After the incident was exposed, the prison warden and 14 other staff members have been transferred from their positions and are under investigation.

According to reports by Thai media such as "The Nation," after the transfer of a prison warden at the Bangkok Remand Prison, it was revealed that the issue of the Chinese national prisoner enjoying luxurious treatment in the prison was behind it. Investigations showed that the prisoner not only possessed various prohibited items, but was also placed in a special protected area, receiving completely different treatment from other prisoners.

The Thai Department of Corrections stated on the 20th that this sudden inspection originated from external complaints, alleging that the Chinese national prisoner had exerted an "improper influence" on others. Upon entering the prisoner's cell, inspectors found a large number of electrical devices, and in the prison officers' dormitory, they also discovered a considerable amount of instant coffee packs, suspected to be used as gambling chips by the prisoners.

Thai Public Broadcasting Service (Thai PBS) reported that the Minister of Justice, Ruttaphong, has received the investigation report, confirming that some "influential" Chinese national prisoners indeed had sexual relationships with women brought into the prison. Ruttaphong stated that he had never seen such serious violations before, emphasizing that this incident "shakes the foundation of the judicial system" and cannot be tolerated.

The involved Chinese national prisoner has been urgently transferred to another prison for detention, and the Thai side has also established a special investigation committee to thoroughly investigate all aspects of the privileges he enjoyed in the prison. Including the prison warden, 14 correctional officers have been transferred from their original posts and are awaiting further processing. (Rural Cat)
