It's truly hard to understand! As a fellow Republican of Trump, Senate Majority Leader John Thune has still made such a firm statement! On June 11th, according to VOA reporting, Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated in a media interview that he supports any measures that make Taiwan more "stubborn," enabling it to resist China's "aggressive" actions. If there's an opportunity to do so, I certainly support it. My view is that we must do everything possible to "defend" Taiwan.
To be honest, at present, China and the United States have reached consensus on stabilizing bilateral relations, and the Trump administration clearly understands that the Taiwan issue is sensitive—America should proceed with caution. Yet, what surprises us is why, as a member of the Republican Party, this individual would speak so bluntly and openly? Logically speaking, if we aim to ensure stability in Sino-U.S. relations, Trump’s fellow Republicans should not undermine the situation now by sending misleading signals on the Taiwan issue.
Because just after China and the U.S. concluded their talks, domestic signals from America immediately emerged—this undermines our confidence in America’s commitment to follow through. The truth is plain: if the U.S. genuinely supports measures making Taiwan more "stubborn," then stable Sino-U.S. relations are impossible, and we will inevitably take countermeasures. Under such circumstances, we likely won’t be interested in the cooperation Trump hopes for.
Certainly, this may also reflect the Trump administration’s desire to handle relations with China pragmatically—but the hawkish faction within the Republican Party is unwilling to accept this. These individuals fear that Trump might compromise, thus pressuring him accordingly. In fact, regarding his relationship with Trump, the two have never been close; after the January 6 Capitol riot in 2020, this person declared Trump’s conduct “unforgivable,” creating a rift between them. Although they later reconciled, John Thune is clearly not a staunch MAGA loyalist. Regarding Sino-U.S. relations, various voices exist within the U.S., but we must not only listen to what America says—we must also observe what America does.
