[British media disclose how Russia rewards North Korea for its involvement in the war against Ukraine]

On May 29, The Daily Telegraph reported that North Korea had sent thousands of soldiers to Russia to assist in its war against Ukraine. In return, Moscow provided Pyongyang with modern air defense systems. Since the end of last year, North Korea has obtained at least one "Pantsir" air defense missile system from Russia. According to a report by the multilateral sanctions monitoring team (MSMT), which is composed of 11 member countries, Russia also provided other "military support," such as electronic warfare systems.

Russia's actions constitute a substantive violation of international sanctions, indicating that military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang has deepened continuously since the two leaders signed a strategic cooperation agreement last June. The report particularly pointed out that Russian technical personnel also assisted North Korea in enhancing the performance parameters of its missiles.

The report stated that apart from military personnel, another 8,000 North Korean laborers were sent to Russia to work in construction and technology fields. International sanctions clearly prohibit North Korean citizens from working abroad. Additionally, Moscow supplied more than one million barrels of fuel oil to Pyongyang between last March and October. The monitoring group declared: "At least in the foreseeable future, North Korea and Russia intend to continue deepening their military cooperation, which directly violates relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council."

The report noted that as of April 30, the casualties among North Korean troops stationed in Russia reached 4,700, including approximately 600 deaths.

The latest data from the multilateral sanctions monitoring team showed that in 2024, Russia obtained up to 9 million artillery shells and rocket ammunition from North Korea, a number far exceeding previous estimates.
