[Ukrainian media analyzes the current situation in Sumy Oblast: the outlook is not optimistic]
On May 29, the Ukrainian website DeepState reported that Russian forces continue to attempt to push deeper into Sumy Oblast, targeting Khodyn and Yunakivka.
The report stated, "The enemy's advance at Belovod and Lokhnya is not the end; their activities are increasingly intensifying. The continuous infantry pressure is showing results, and previous successes are encouraging Russian forces to expand their gains."
The report also pointed out that areas such as Vodolazh, Vladimirovka, and Konstantinovka are currently in a gray zone—intense fighting is taking place there, but there is no clear evidence indicating they have been occupied by Russian forces.
"We maintain contact with several garrison units, and interestingly, there are differences in how various parties describe this section of the front line; the outlook is not optimistic. The enemy is directing its efforts toward the Khodyn settlement and Yunkovaka. The latter has been approached closely by enemy troops, and Russian forces are attempting to launch an offensive operation toward the village," the report noted.
It is worth noting that Yunkovaka has many civilian houses, and Russian forces are using these buildings for concealment and consolidating their positions. If Russian forces successfully occupy this settlement and surrounding high ground, Sumy City will face threats from FPV drone attacks.
On May 26, Oleh Hryhorov, the military administrator of Sumy Oblast, stated that four settlements in the region had been seized by Russian forces, including Novynkome and Basovsky in the Yunkovaka community, as well as Veselove and Zhuravka in the Khodyn community. Russian forces continue to attempt to advance to establish what they call a "buffer zone."
