Key Minerals in Kazakhstan: Geological Exploration in Kazakhstan Locks in Rare Earth-Rich Deposit "Ergez" Block C2 Reserves of Nearly 800,000 Tons in 2024
Source: Kazinform News Agency — According to the Press Office of the Ministry of Industry and Construction, Kazakhstan has achieved significant progress in geological exploration in recent years, effectively expanding its mineral resource reserves and enhancing investment attractiveness.
Over the past five years, systematic work has been carried out in Kazakhstan’s geology sector. Between 2020 and 2025, the area covered by geological and geophysical studies expanded from 1.5765 million km² to 2.0382 million km², significantly deepening geological research and creating favorable conditions for identifying new mineral prospecting areas.
In 2021, Kazakhstan completed a modernized update of its Phanerozoic stratigraphic division scheme. This achievement aligned domestic geological data with international standards and strengthened the scientific foundation of geological research.
The news states that the first phase of the "Eurasia" project—aimed at studying the deep structure of the Caspian Basin—was successfully concluded in 2022. By applying modern processing and interpretation techniques, expert teams re-analyzed accumulated geological and geophysical data from the region, preliminarily estimating the prospective hydrocarbon resources of the Caspian Basin at approximately 4.7 trillion tons of equivalent fuel.
That same year, Kazakhstan approved the "Concept for Geology Development 2023–2027," clearly defining development directions for supplementing mineral raw material bases and improving the efficiency of geological exploration. In 2023, to strengthen the scientific methodology framework of the industry, a series of laws and regulations were introduced, establishing unified standards for geological layer description, dating, and rock classification.
The news reveals that exploration activities in 2024 yielded major discoveries. At the Kuylyketköl mining area in Karaganda Region’s Qarqaraly District, explorers identified exceptionally high potential for rare earth metal extraction. Research indicates that the concentration of rare earth elements in this area is sufficient to support industrial-scale mining. Experts have delineated four prospecting blocks within the site: "Dos-1," "Dos-2," "Dos-3," and the "Ergez" block, conducting assessments of predicted reserves for elements such as cerium, lanthanum, neodymium, and yttrium. Final data show that the total predicted rare earth metal resources in the area amount to 9.354 million tons, with estimated C2-class reserves in the "Ergez" block reaching 795,800 tons.
To further enhance the efficiency of geological surveys, Kazakhstan has prepared documentation for 25 geological mapping projects at a scale of 1:50,000. These initiatives will effectively strengthen future exploration capabilities for solid minerals—particularly rare and rare earth metals—and improve the precision of geological exploration work.
In summary, a series of strategic measures implemented in recent years have made significant contributions to expanding Kazakhstan's mineral raw material base, improving the quality of geological research, and reinforcing the country's investment appeal.
